Hello,

This is The Puebloan. The Puebloan comes as our home of 170,000 people face near total collapse of news, culture and commentary. It is bleak and dire and the impact of a weak news ecosystem hurts all Puebloans.

That is why I’m starting The Puebloan to tell the story of Puebloans, our hopes, dreams, problems, celebrations and heritage. It may not solve anything and hell it may not even work but why not try.

So what is The Puebloan?

It’s news, culture, commentary, stories and/or essays about Pueblo.

This is something that will build slowly and won’t be regular until, or even if it’s possible, a financial model is put in place to sustain it.

But to start I want the Puebloan to be:

  • A place to tell the stories few others are telling.

  • A place to be an economic driver for culture and arts coverage.

  • A place for commentary since there is no editorial coverage of Pueblo at all.

  • A place for journalists, writers and those with a great story of all backgrounds to write about Pueblo and have a home again.

Who is behind this? Why now?

Hi again, I’m the former publisher of the PULP, John Rodriguez.

I believe it’s important to continue to tell the story of Pueblo but I believe our narrative must be owned and told by Puebloans. News corporations do not have Pueblo’s best interests at heart putting sensationalism ahead of quality information and profits ahead of people.

After 8 years of publishing an arts and culture newspaper and serving as PIO for the City of Pueblo, I can say with full conviction that you are not getting the information on your community.

I started The Puebloan now because I cannot impress upon just how dire the news situation is in Pueblo. Pueblo is facing a near total collapse of its news ecosystem and if that happens that will only hurt Puebloans.

Is this a weekly, a daily a new monthly newspaper?

Maybe, one day. However days of printed newspapers are coming to end. With the Pueblo Chieftain and others shutting down in-house printing, I am not sure how long print will hold on.

The Puebloan could turn into a regular digital outlet under a non-profit news model but I will explore those options in the future and very publicly. This is why I’m setting this up now.

Is this the PULP?

No. The PULP is dead and won’t come back. The PULP had a great run, it had a great staff and did some pretty amazing things for being so small. The pandemic took PULP out and it won’t return.

How can I support The Puebloan?

Subscribe. This is the most helpful thing you can do.
